Storage is Everywhere in Information Age

In the age of information, a lot of invaluable information are stored in hard disks and removable storage media such as Flash and Smart memory devices.

Storage can sometimes fail. Even though modern hard disks are pretty sturdy, can absorb shocks up to 200-300G, and its Mean Time To Failure (MTTF) often indicates that the hard disk should last several years, maybe 5 or even 10 years, the reality is that hard disks can cease functioning unexpectedly with little or no warning at any time.

Data Recovery Considerations

When any data storage media encounter problems, the immediate fear is always data loss. The first decision more than often is to ask if the data can be savaged.

The subsequent actions taken depends on if there are alternatives to manage the data loss. Regular backups would have much lessen such impact. Otherwise, the decision to directly recover the data from the failed storage media will be a commercial one, of whether the information is worth the cost of recovery. In other words, the decision weighs on the value of the data.

Based on our experience, data can be recovered from 80% of the storage media. Another 15% will require more intensive repairs subjected to the availability and delivery of the replacement parts, which may cause delays in turnaround time. Only for the remaining 5%, the data is either too costly or too time-consuming to recover, or forever lost.

Logical Vs Physical Data Recovery

We do not guarantee 100% data recovery, because we understand that technology has its limitations. Data Recovery can be broadly classified as Logical or Physical.

  • Logical Data Recovery is usually carried out at software level, such as recovering files, directories and even paritions, accidentally deleted from the hard disk drive, or rebuilding a corrupted or virus infected boot sector.

  • Physical Data Recovery, on the other hand, can only be carried out by Data Recovery Specialist, like ourselves, to retrieve data in the unfortunate event of a hard disk failure. Because this delicate process requires a certified clean room facility and specialized tools for extracting the data from a storage media, in non-working condition.

Physical repairs are often followed by logical reconstruction especially if some data is permanently lost due to damaged disc surfaces. This process is time consuming and costly.

Time Element in Data Recovery

Do not underestimate the time element in data recovery. For logical data recovery, losing the data for a week can meant effectively losing the data for good.

For example, in Microsoft Windows, a single file either accidentally or permanently deleted are moved to Recycle Bin. By emptying the Recycle Bin, the file will be effectively freed from the associated FAT entry and the deleted file will no longer protected by the file system. The Operating System can utilize the released resources to create new file and the information may be overridden and lost forever.

For physical data recovery, the data may be permanently lost, if there are excessive physical damage to the platters, but the magnetic force is usually strong enough to hold the data intact except under extreme conditions. It is therefore highly recommended that in the event of a hard disk crash, shutdown the power immediately and contact a Data Recovery professional for immediate assistance.

Good to Know DIY Basic Diagnostics

As we now know, when a hard disk crash, it does not meant the end of the world, under most circumstances the data can still be recovered with a pretty good rate of success. After deciding that the data is commercial viable to be recovered, it is now time to rein in the Data Recovery professional.

But it will be useful to know more about your Hard Disk. For those technology savvy, they may like to do some DIY troubleshooting themselves. For more detailed description [Click Here]

Next, provide a problem description by recalling what last happened during the usage of the hard disk. Information such:

  • Is there a blackout or power trip?

  • Are there any error messages on bad sectors in the system logs before the crash?

  • Are there any unusual system behaviour before the crash?

  • Has there been movement of the computer from one cubicle to another?

  • Has the hard disk been dropped onto a hard surface (physical shock) or man-handled (static electrical damage)

More information about the hard disk can be easily found on the labelling on the topside of the hard disk. It contains the manufacturer name, the part number and serial number, and the hard disk capacity. Keep the information handy, especially when sending in your storage media for recovery.

Last but not least, it will be even better to know information about the Operating Systems and the type of file systems the hard disk is running on.

Armed with the above information, you can show that you meant business when dealing with any Data Recovery specialist (including us).

No Data No Charge

For Physical Data Recovery, we are equipped to work in a clean room environment with specialized workbenches, for repairing data storage media, recovery of data from damaged media and if necessary, perform logical file reconstruction. The chances of successful repair and data recovery depend largely on the extent of the damage. The recovered data will be transferred onto another hard disk storage media, usually of similar (if not compatible) configurations.

For Logical Data Recovery, we rebuild files that have been damaged, or corrupted, or accidentally deleted, instead of performing surgical repair on the hard disks. This requires in-depth knowledge of a host of different Operating Systems, from Windows and Mac OS to different variants of Unix and Linux, and their underlying file systems.

We standby our "No Data, No Charge" policy, our customer only pay if the data can be recovered and complete. Payments will be revised downwards in any instancs of partially recovered data. Otherwise, we will refund any payments if we are unable to fulfill our obligations.
